Co-founded by Reshma Shetty, Ginkgo Bioworks began in a Cambridge, MA apartment in 2008 with the mission of making biology easier to engineer. Since then, the synthetic biology startup has been spun out of MIT, and with Reshma’s guidance has grown to over 200 employees and raised over $450 million in financing.
In October 2018, Ginkgo launched Bioworks4, its fourth-generation facility for design, fabrication, and testing of custom designed microbes. Ginkgo is currently engineering more than 50 organisms to spec for customers including Ajinomoto, Cargill, and ADM. Reshma has a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in Biological Engineering from MIT.
